Bleeding and Powerflushing Explained

Posted on: October 21st, 2011 No Comments

There are two basic services that many central heating systems benefit from having: bleeding and powerflushing.  Radiant central heating systems are vulnerable to builds ups in the piping systems.  Air or dirt can get trapped inside the pipes.  Then, over time it works its way to the radiators and collects there.  Radiators are an ideal location to trap both air and sludge due to the multiple turns the air and debris would have to do to escape the radiator.  Bleeding allows trapped air to escape.  Basically, radiators are equipped with a “lock” that keeps all the water inside.  It also traps any air as well.  By opening the “lock” you allow the air to escape.  It is easy to tell when the radiator has been successfully bled, because water will start to spill out of the radiator.  This process is one that many people are able to perform themselves.

Powerflushing, on the other hand, requires the services of a professional.  This service removes the trapped slime to allow free flow of the water.  However, the equipment that is used to perform this service is expensive and bulky, making it unlikely that most home owners would have access to it.  For a quality powerflushing service contact ADI today on 0800 731 3843.
